The Great Race

Taylor’s a sleek bolt of cross country lightning and I’m a house of donuts.  Yet, I’ve put a cool $50 on the line with Taylor that I can out fitness her over the next eight weeks.  A near 40-year old taking on a 15′er. Just as easy as Auburn’s 4-0 record right?

Here’s the deal:

Over eight weeks we’ll both change something about our fitness regime.  My winnings will be Taylor taking me to dinner and a movie.  Her winnings are $50 for new clothing.

Taylor’s goal is to develop and stick with a nutritional plan worthy of a high powered cross-country runner AND to achieve another personal best time in the 5k while doing it. Basically she has to eat more of the right foods and keep running.

My goal is to maintain a balanced diet AND lose 20 pounds.  Basically I have to eat the right foods and maintain a fitness schedule.  Sounds like I have this one in the bag already.

Stay tuned, we’ll be posting our progress over the next eight weeks.  My weigh in is in the morning.  Taylor will need to hit the grocery store too.

Wish us luck!

Palmetto Thoughts

The chickens are well on their way to being cooked.  We’re smoking them on the Weber tonight with a little hickory.  We have two whole fryers about 3.5 lbs each.  We’ll dunk them in white sauce once they come off in a couple of hours.

It’s a special day, a special game this evening.  South Carolina is close to our hearts.  We have fond memories of our time there.  Both kids were born in the Columbia area.  Tracey’s family is deeply rooted in the Palmetto State.

As you can imagine we have a lot or respect for the Gamecocks.  As a DJ for WARQ, I had the pleasure of hosting tailgate events at Tally Ho just a couple of wobbly strides from Williams-Brice Stadium.  Those were fun times and I can relate to the ups and downs of being a Gamecock fan.

If anyone deserves a nice run, it’s South Carolina.  The only problem is that my Tigers are in their way tonight.  I’ve been fortunate to come out on the winning end more than losing.  (Actually I don’t recall Auburn losing to South Carolina in recent memory.  It may have happened.)  Tonight however we’re a little anxious.

Tonight the ‘ole ball coach brings a different type of team into Jordan-Hare Stadium.  A power running attack isn’t the type of offense one normally associates with Steve Spurrier.  The Gamecocks are also getting it done on defense too.  Although South Carolina didn’t sell out their ticket allotment, I’m certain their fans’ tailgating has already become legend on the Plains.

Flip that over to Auburn… we’re running well but our top runner is the QB.  The offense has acted more like the “little train that could” instead of the sleek and fast steam liner we were expecting.  Our defense is improving but hasn’t faced a team of South Carolina’s caliber yet.  Oh yea, that other team from the state of South Carolina we beat in OT last week left Auburn asking questions about its mental and physical toughness.

Yes, tonight we’re anxious.

Many well wishes to our clan and friends in the Palmetto State.

The Cocks may be up and coming but it will take more than a blue pill to bring it home this evening.

(Sorry just couldn’t resist one nice pun.)

Cheers!

Rush Spirit

I think we may have another Rush fan in the Feary clan.  Hale caught her first show last Saturday.  The Canadian trio played Jiffy Lube Live in Bristow, Virginia September 18.  We drove up in the morning for a day of festivities rounded out by the show.

Yes, we took in a little history making sure we were one of the few who got into the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center when they opened at 10am.  After a quick check-in at our hotel and lunch, we scooted over to the Manassas Battlefield Park to check out Stonewall.  It was a productive day and one we won’t forget for a while.

The main attraction no doubt was Rush.  After Hale showed an interest in the band weeks ago, I secured tickets online.  Hale was sporting her Fly By Night tee with matching Rush shoe laces on her Chuck Taylors.  I donned my R30 tee from 2004.  We were quite the pair.

Hale was releived to see lots of kids her age, excuse me ,”people of her generation”.  Maybe it was the 300 level seats, or maybe it was a bunch of old Dads like me trying to pass something along.  I dunno but it made Hale more relaxed and that made me confident I would see an entire show without interuption.

And I should give Hale credit.  She was a trooper.  As a matter of fact I don’t think I’ve seen her smile so wide and for so long in a while.  If anything it was worth it just for that!

So onto the show eh… Rush.  These guys have played all summer long and they sounded like it.  I think this is the first show in a couple of decades where I didn’t think they sounded better than the last.  It may have been where we were seated/standing.  It certainly could have been the way the show was mixed.  The self-restricting flow of tall boys may have damaged my ear drums too.  As much as I love Rush it pains me to say that this wasn’t as good as shows past.  But there were plenty of highlights.

I don’t believe I have ever heard YYZ or La Villa Strangiato played as fast.  Wow.  Machines were on fire.  The front row had eye brows seared away.  The blue jays in the forest were eating scrambled eggs.  For music that supposedly was beyond their talents, Rush demonstrated mastery of their writing in playing these instrumentals.

Hale was leaping for joy upon hearing Spirit of the Radio and Tom Sawyer.  She also was happy to hear several songs off my recent mixes.  Faithless, Freewill, Presto, Stick It Out, and Red Barchetta were all tunes I passed along to her iPod.  I was just as happy to hear them as she was.

Although Time Stand Still wasn’t as polished as I would have expected, I was pleased to hear that tune. My late brother Dwan gifted me the album that featured the single.  I recall listening to the cassette while driving through the Morgan County moonlight just minutes after unwrapping it.  I still have that tape.  Thanks Bro!

I was curious to see how playing the entire Moving Pictures album front to back would work.  I enjoyed it but it lacked the gusto down the stretch that I was expecting.  Even Geddy Lee pronounced, “that was the Moving Pictures album, the whole damn thing.”  Just once, one tour, I would like to see these guys come out and play unique set lists each show.  Forget the production, the video, and the effects.  Just play one unique set list after another.

Still, in a time where the bee-boppers only can lip-sync for an hour or so, you can’t deny three guys playing 26 songs over a couple of hours.  There is no one like Rush and most likely never will be in my time.  They have an album being released soon, me thinks.  If you missed them this time around, don’t be left out next time.

Peace…

Rush: To Be or…

At one time in my life I wanted to be Alex Lifeson.  I would crank my mother’s Pioneer sound system when she was away.  When she was home I would burn up the headphones.  I think I got caught a couple of times laying down a monster Lifeson solo on a broom stick.  Others had Eddie Van Halen.  It was Alex Lifeson for me.

Then I thought the bass would be better so I memorized every Geddy Lee riff.  Only problem with Geddy Lee is how in the heck does he play bass pedals, keyboards, and then back to bass while maintaining an insane octave in his vocals?

Then it was drums.  How could you not be transfixed on the drumming of Neal Peart?  I broke lots of air drum sticks in my bedroom, car, and still today with Hale as we cruise around town.  She’s thinking of being a drummer but like me she’s gone from guitar, keyboards, and now to drums.  Thankfully because she can’t make up her mind we don’t own a recording studio, but it would be fun.

A couple of days ago we threw up our 18 favorites from the most recent Rush studio albums of the closest 20 years.  Now it’s time to go deeper into the first 20 years.  Here we feature a mix of tunes well remembered from our teens and college years… the tunes that got us busted by our parents, drank our first beers to, asked our friends to crowd around the turntable to listen in awe, and rejected by girls in college for listening too much to…

Truth be told, this would be the “Fly By Night/Grace Under Pressure/ 2112/ Signals Mix” as I could listen to those albums back-to-back any day of the week but as this mix needs some diversity…

We give you the “Rush To BE” mix:

  1. Finding My Way, Rush
  2. Best I Can, Fly By Night
  3. New World Man, Signals
  4. Something for Nothing, 2112
  5. La Villa Strangiato, Hemispheres
  6. Mission, Hold Your Fire
  7. Red Barchetta, Moving Pictures
  8. Making Memories, Fly By Night
  9. Middletown Dreams, Power Windows
  10. Presto, Presto
  11. The Analog Kid, Signals
  12. Afterimage, Grace Under Pressure
  13. Time Stand Still, Hold Your Fire
  14. Entre Nous, Permanent Waves
  15. The Trees, Hemispheres
  16. Lessons, 2112
  17. In the End, Fly By Night
  18. Resist, R30
  19. Heart Full of Soul, R30

Rush Ready

A couple of weeks ago I confessed to my colleagues this would be the first summer I would not see Rush in many tours.  Maybe that was a signal to the planets.  That next Sunday Palladia aired the new Rush movie, Behind the Lighted Stage.  Hale showed interest.

Hmm…

I quickly scanned tickets online for the DC show September 18.  Like most of their tour, the show is virtually sold out.  Lawn seats were the only thing left.  StubHub provided a reasonable remedy.

So we’re going.  Upon hearing the news that she was invited to a Rush concert, Hale provided the hardest high-five of her life.  My hand is still stinging.

Below I offer a mix of my favorite Rush tunes of the new era.  Rush has been making music for 40 years.  Modern era would be the last 20-ish.  Enjoy!

I’ll Be Your Friend

There have been several reports since Thursday of Auburn players and coaches singing “Lean on Me” together.  Two thoughts: 1) good to hear unity, 2) seriously, Lean on Me?!

Of all the songs that could be sung together… Lean on Me?  I suppose the wonderful Auburn video crew will now change the stadium video given all the complaints of the chosen pump up song.  Lean on Me now makes the top of the list.  Look for the future fan vote soon.

Lean on Me.

Oh this just in… Auburn announced a new football sponsor.  Kleenex will now be suppling the team with product in the locker room.  Now when soft mushy songs are sang in unison, the team can blow their noses without injury to the sensitive skin around their nostrils.

God withdrew his sponsorship offer when he heard the University was opposed to fire, brimstone, locust plagues, blood oozing from away team water faucets, and gigantic scaly beasts destroying opposing defenses. Lean on Me was also a factor.  “C’mon, of all the talent I provide, Lean on Me?!” said God.

Sorry Auburn, coaches, players… Love the teamwork, the bonding, the togetherness. Just can’t resist the choice. “Lean on Me“.  Really?

Random notes on the Mississippi State game and others:

  • Glad to see good defensive play.  Of course I’m not a Roof hater like some.  But I have to admit the DL play and tackling was much improved.  Can’t wait to see it in action against Clemson.
  • The offense wasn’t perfect but 17 points was enough to get it done against the Bulldogs.  I was surprised at the conservative play calling and what appeared to be the plan.  However with our first two games played in a five day span, keeping it simple appeared to have been the smartest play.
  • Young blood is providing a good boost.  Michael Dyer looks real fresh with every touch.  Craig Sanders is an absolute bat out of hell on special teams.  I can’t wait to see him rush a QB!
  • Penn State at UAT: The Nittany Lions will not be out coached, they rarely are.  I don’t think Penn State’s youth at QB can overcome all the other intangibles.  Never the less, Blue and White will be worn at HQ tonight.
  • I think the best game today in many respects is UGA at South Carolina.  I have no real preference in the game but kind of like the Gamecocks.  Something tells me the old ball coach may have something to work with in 2010.

Enjoy your Saturday!
