Number 6

And we finally make it to Number 6, Auburn’s sixth straight victory over Alabama.  The 2007 Iron Bowl certainly lived up to the reputation of the rivalry.  There was plenty of Saban hype.  Lots of talk about Auburn’s inept offense.  Alabama’s extreme desire to break the streak.  A nationally televised audience on ESPN.

Auburn won in typical Auburn fashion: running the football and hard hitting defense.  We chose the video above for a reason.  We terribly miss Tray Blackmon as he has suffered from injuries this season.  Tray had a great game against the Tide last year and as the video shows, kept injecting himself into the announcer’s commentary.  It had to be one of his better games to date in his Auburn career.

Auburn defender Jerraud Powers' interception of Alabama QB John Parker Wilson in the 2007 Iron BowlThe trademark play of the game came late in the second quarter.  After Alabama intercepted a Brandon Cox pass and returned it to the Auburn 19 yard line, the Tide were poised to take a 14-10 lead into the locker room.  Alabama quarterback John Parker Wilson lofted a pass into the left back corner of the Auburn end zone where a Alabama receiver bobbled the ball.  Auburn defender Jarraud Powers stole the ball right from the finger tips of the Tide receiver for an interception.  The Tide wouldn’t get close to a TD again.

The final score turned in last year was Auburn 17, Alabama 10.  ESPN has the full recap.

No Auburn team has ever beaten Alabama six times straight.  It’s hard to imagine but both teams’ rosters are filled completely with kids who have never lost/beaten their in-state rival.  This year’s game will truly be unique.  Alabama has many a senior that have never secured bragging rights.  Auburn has lots of young players that never have felt the pain of a loss to Alabama.  We hope it stays that way.

War Eagle ya’ll!

Number 5

I’m not sure what we can say about beating Bama for the 5th straight time other than it was special.  Auburn’s offense in 2006 was starting to lose its production.  Although Alabama had lost some close games to ranked opponents they were still a formidable opponent.  The game setting was Tuscaloosa.  Alabama coach Mike Shula’s job was on the line.

I recall that we coined this game the “Quentin Groves game”.  Auburn’s defense forced four turnovers including the critical game sealing interception as time was winding down.  Groves had seven tackles including two sacks that forced two fumbles that directly lead to 14 Tiger points.

It was one of those games where the bottle of Dickel goes dry about mid-way through the 3rd quarter and you’re still so nervous you bang your head on the coffee table to distract your attention.  This was certainly one of the closest Iron Bowls in recent memory.  Maybe other games had close scores but this game could have easily gone the other way.

ESPN has the full recap.

Beauty Two

We feel compelled to post content now that we seem to finally have the site functioning.  Wow, the story we can share about getting this set up… But we’re saving that for a wintry day.  That may be sooner than later with as cold as it has been here in St. Louis.  Although the conditions for the holiday look to be fair.

The beauty of converting the blog over to WordPress has been discovering old posts and reflecting on those stories.  It’s hard to imagine that the site is well over two years old with stories sharing our life and the times.  We often comment and think how fast time goes by.  But when I look back at all the content on the site I pause to really think about that.  Maybe it’s not so much time moving quickly as we cram so many things into our time.  Hmm…

Anyway, we uncovered the Beauty post from April.  We set out to share some mixes of old in that post.  We never got back to it.  So here we are… “Beauty Disc II”.

We weren’t sure how these mixes would evolve and that is certainly evident in this volume.  I can’t recall how it was thrown together other than we were attempting to duplicate the first mix, just with a different set of songs.  Somewhere however some tunes that really weren’t great got shuffled in.  My guess is that I was trying to fill the CD rather than focus on the mix itself.

There are some tunes here though that have turned out to be my favorites.  Something Corporate’s Drunk Girl is a great tune and there are several off of that album that are on my iPod.  Amber Awaits which opens the mix has turned out to be a trusty work out mix tune – great for getting warmed up.  Other noteables include a Police cover by Ra, tunes by Our Lady Peace and Yellowcard, and another Cult tune found its way in.

Number 4

What can we say about Number 4 that hasn’t already been written about?  Not much.

It was another year that houndstooth nation proclaimed “Bama is Back”.  The Tide had a nation leading defense in 2005.  At one point the team had been ranked as high as number 4.  Huh?  Yep, you can’t make stuff this good up.

Turns out that media is a great motivator for the Auburn Tigers.  During the year their accomplishments had been overshadowed by this “back” phenomena.  They rode that to a decisive victory in the first quarter of the game, well actually the first several minutes of the game.  The Tigers made a statement, jumping out to a 21-0 lead.

It was the Auburn defense however that stole the show.  Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle was sacked 11 times.   Alabama only gained a total of 188 yards for the game.

This is another game to make the top 10 list of the most memorable Auburn wins in the Tommy Tuberville era.  ESPN has the full game recap.

Next up in our countdown to Iron Bowl 2008:  2006, So Long Shula

Number 3

What can say about number 3 in the series of 6 straight wins?  We pause for a moment as we realize the irony of this year’s season as compared to this moment in time in 2004.  Yet we can’t help use the word “perfect”.

The Tigers came into Tuscaloosa with a 10-0 record.  The Tide was searching for win number 7.  They didn’t care about win number 7.  They wanted 1.  One win over Auburn.  One loss on Auburn’s otherwise perfect season.  Their first victory over the Tigers in Tuscaloosa.  Just one game.

The Tide certainly put forth their best effort in the first half of the game.  They managed to hold the Tigers scoreless and lead 6-0 at halftime.

The second half was another story.  Senior QB Jason Campbell would not allow the Tigers to be denied a perfect regular season.  Campbell’s final numbers told a very effecient story, 18 of 24 for 224 yards.  However it was his numbers from the third period that told the tale.  Campbell was 8-9 and 163 yards.  This was his team.  His game to lead Auburn to victory.

Another interesting sidenote… Carnell “Cadillac” Williams broke Bo Jackson’s TD record with his 44th TD scored in this game.  Quite fitting for an Auburn tailback who consistently executed well in Iron Bowl games.

ESPN has the full recap.

(BTW:  Although I find the attached video above corny and silly, it still represents the second half story fairly well.)

Our countdown of the past 6 victories over Alabama continues tomorrow.  Next Up: How many sacks can one defense have on an opponent’s QB?  The 2005 Iron Bowl will tell the tale.

Number 2

Different circumstances surrounded the 2003 Iron Bowl.  Neither team had any hopes of reaching the SEC title match.  Both teams brought a combined twelve losses into the game.  Even with a win, Alabama would have a losing record on the season.  But that didn’t matter.  The Tide would not let go easily and even with all the Tiger fireworks, kept the game close.

The Tigers entered 2003 full of expectations.  Featured on the front cover of magazines, some had picked Auburn to win it all.  However under a new offensive coordinator the Tigers struggled early and often and never really found the consistency that many had predicted.  Just one week prior it was discovered that school officials had taken a secret trip to Louisville to court a new head coach.  Would this be Tommy Tuberville’s last game at Auburn?

The emotions of the year, speculation of an impending head coaching change, and that November day’s opponent fueled the Tiger machine.  Carnell “Cadillac” Williams.  He sat out the previous two Iron Bowl games because of injury.  Bama may have heard of him and some of the players may have played against him in high school.  None were prepared for the explosion of performance they would encounter November 22, 2003.

The first play from scrimmage would tell the tale.  Cadillac took the ball and ran 80 yards for his first touchdown on the day.  Auburn announcer Rod Bramblett would say over the air during this game, “go crazy cadillac” and this game has become known for just that.  It also became known that Cadillac favored “Crazy Train” by Ozzy Osbourne.  It was fitting then that Cadillac ran all over the Tide for 204 total yards of rushing.
