I’m not sure what we can say about beating Bama for the 5th straight time other than it was special. Auburn’s offense in 2006 was starting to lose its production. Although Alabama had lost some close games to ranked opponents they were still a formidable opponent. The game setting was Tuscaloosa. Alabama coach Mike Shula’s job was on the line.
I recall that we coined this game the “Quentin Groves game”. Auburn’s defense forced four turnovers including the critical game sealing interception as time was winding down. Groves had seven tackles including two sacks that forced two fumbles that directly lead to 14 Tiger points.
It was one of those games where the bottle of Dickel goes dry about mid-way through the 3rd quarter and you’re still so nervous you bang your head on the coffee table to distract your attention. This was certainly one of the closest Iron Bowls in recent memory. Maybe other games had close scores but this game could have easily gone the other way.
